Date: Thursday, 22nd March 2018, 6.30-8.30pm
Location: The W OR M, 11 Castle Street, Aberdeen, AB11 5BQ
This event is produced by Donald Butler and is part of the W OR M / OPEN programme.
Grouping and Accommodating takes its name from terms often used on gay dating/hook-up apps (i.e, looking for group / can accommodate), however in this context seeks to use this language as an action statement, where upon The W OR M becomes a site in which members of the LGBTQ+ community can assemble.
Grouping and Accommodating proposes to invite those from the LGBTQ+ community based in Aberdeen, as well as members of LGBTQ+ groups and societies, to have a group discussion taking stock of their individual experiences of apps, websites, online communities and the impacts they are having on both the experience of LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as the effects on the wider community. Questions of particular importance are the role of apps and websites leading to the erosion of physical queer spaces; the epidemic of gay loneliness; how LGBTQ+ individuals are becoming more liberated but also increasingly private in the digital age; how to create situations where the LGBTQ+ community can gather and become organised – or if individuals feel this is even necessary in light of the popularity of online communication within queer communities.
Grouping and Accommodating seeks to act as a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals in the city to gather and meet each other outside of online communication, make each other aware of their presence and allow for a discussion to be had about contemporary queer experience within Aberdeen.
