Join artist Tako Taal for a SUPERLUX Workshop in Aberdeen that will introduce approaches to framing, the body and strategies of resistance in moving image making.

Drawing on the work of black filmmakers, particular attention will be given to surface, gesture and the relationship between body and camera, accompanying an exploration of different techniques of observing, recording and editing.

Working within and against the limitations of the cinematic image, participants will collectively devise strategies for image making considering DIY and amateur approaches alongside examples of Taal’s own work and references to the work of other artists including Sondra Perry, Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa and Arthur Jafa.

Please bring your own preferred device for filming (smartphone/ DSLR/digital camera) or contact if you don’t have access to one of these devices and would like to take part.

After the workshop event we will be hosting artist Tako Taal and curator Seán Elder in W OR M. They will present an evening event that includes screenings of recent works by Taal and a ‘conversant dialogue’ between artist and curator, making public a series of interactions between the two.

Drawing from email exchanges, minutes, notes and remembered phone calls, Taal and Elder will engage with material that surrounded and supported works made public in past various guises through institutions, publishing or social media. These engagements will encompass their concerns of working together, the relational component of developing new work, and languages commonly associated with the figures of art-production.
